The Comox Valley is one of the best places on Vancouver Island to enjoy a variety of hikes and trails. Stunning scenery surrounds the Comox Valley with the Comox Glacier crowning the Beaufort Mountain range to the west, and the calm waters of the Georgia Straight to the east. There are three communities that make up the Comox Valley – the seaside Town of Comox, the City of Courtenay and the historic Village of Cumberland. The Comox Valley provides access to a multitude of choices for nature lovers, families and hikers.
Hiking in Strathcona Provincial Park
Strathcona Provincial Park is the oldest provincial park in British Columbia and is the largest on Vancouver Island. It is located almost in the centre of Vancouver Island, just a short drive away from the Comox Valley.
Here are highlights of a few of the trails in Strathcona Provincial Park:
Upper Myra Falls – 7.9 km
This family-friendly walk can take 2 to 3 hours depending on the age of the hikers. The trail takes you through an impressive old-growth forest to the beautiful Upper Myra Waterfall. The trail is well maintained and is perfect for the whole family as it is not too steep.
Bedwell Lakes – 11.4 km
This well-maintained trail is one of the best in Strathcona Provincial Park. It includes engineered bridges, staircases and boardwalks. This loop will take 3 to 5 hours depending on the experience of the hikers and is well worth it because of the views of Big Interior Peak and Mt. Tom Taylor.
Mt. Albert Edward – 30.9 km
Mt. Albert Edward has become an iconic part of Vancouver Island hiking, climbing, and skiing history. BC Parks classifies the top section of the hike up Mt. Albert Edward as a route, not a trail. The top part is extremely steep and at times washed out. Plan to take your time and maybe stay overnight at Circlet Lake to break up the trip. Once you are at the summit you will see the Vancouver Island Alps, with stunning and breathtaking views of the peaks of well-known mountains such as the Golden Hinde, the tallest mountain on Vancouver Island.
There are hundreds of beaches, parks, trails and hikes in the Comox Valley. For more information visit Comox Valley Regional District Beaches and Parks and Courtenay Parks.
